Kalk II

(DD -611: dp. 1,620; 1. 348'4"; b. 36'1"; dr. 11'9"; epl. 258; s. 37.5 k., a. 4 5", 4 40mm., 7 20mm., 5 21" tt., 6 dcp., 2 dct.; cl. Benson)

The second Kalk (DD -611) was laid down 30 June 1941 by the Bethlehem Steel Co., San Francisco, Calif.; launched 18 July 1942, sponsored by Mrs. Flora Stanton Kalk, mother of Lieutenant Kalk, and commissioned 17 October, I`t. Comdr. C. T. Singleton, Jr., in command.

Following shakedown along the California coast,Kalk departed San Franeiseo 28 December for patrol and escort duty in the Aleutians. Steaming via Dutch Harbor, she arrived Adak 9 January and patrolled from Adak to AmchitRa Island. On the 16th she embarked 185 survivors

of SS Arthur Middleton and Worden (DD-352) which had foundered in an Aretic storm. She transported them to Adak, then continued intermittent patrols until she sailed 26 February for home, arriving San Francisco 4 March.

After repairs, Kalk steamed from San Franeisco 7 April and proceeded via the Panama Canal to New York, where she arrived a fortnight later for Atlantic convoy escort duty. She cleared New York 28 April and the next day joined a 35 ship convoy, UGF-8, headed for Oran, Algeria. Arriving 12 May, she searched for a suspected U-boat. The destroyer departed Casablanea, French Moroceo, 19 May escorting a westbound convoy. Arriving New York 31 May, she sailed 13 June via Casco Bay, Maine, and Argentia, Newfoundland, to Norfolk for further convoyescort duty. From 27 June to 6 December she escorted three convoys between the United States and North Affiea. After overhaul at New York and Boston, she arrived Norfolk 29 December and then sailed 2 January 1944 for the Pacidc.

She departed Balboa, Canal Zone, 8 January with DesDiv 38, escorting battleships New Jersep (BB - 2) and Iowa ( BB-61) . Reaching Funatuti, Ellice Islands 27 January, Kalk seurched for downed flghter planes before sailing for New Guinea 31 January to ioin the 7th Fleet at Milne Bay 7 E,ebruary. She operated in the New Guinea area, primarily on patrol and convoy escort duty, until 12 June. During the protracted struggle for New Guinea, she also covered amphibious invasions, bombarding Manus, Pityilu, Los Negros, and Rambutye Islands, Admiralties: Tanahmerah Bay and Wakde-Sarmi, New Guinea, and Biak and Owi, Schouten Islands.

After providing fire support during the invasion of Biak Island 27 May, Kalk continued escort and picket duty between Biak and Humboldt Bay. While on patrol 12 June off the southern coast of Biak, an enemy plane dived out of the sun and released a bomb which struck abaft her forward stack at the base of her starboard torpedo tubes. As Kalk's 20mm. gunfire splashed the attacker, the bomb exploded the air flasks of her torpedoes, destroying several 20mm. guns, showering her crew with shrapnel, and damaging her superstructure amidships. Though suffering 70 casualties, her heroic crew rallied to save the destroyer. Skillful Hrefighters extinguished each blaze; and, while other hands tended the wounded, volunteers detached the warheads from torpedoes scattered about the deck. Every man knew what to do and did it.

The only Allied ship seriously damaged in more than 2 weeks of repeated air attacks at and near Biak, Kalk retired to Hollandia, New Guinea, for emergency repairs and sailed 20 June via the Admiralties and Pearl Harbor for the United States. Reaching San Francisco 31 July, she received complete repairs and underwent alteration at Mare Island.

Then the gallant destroyer departed 26 October for Pearl Harbor, arriving 1 November. On 12 November she headed via Eniwetok to Ulithi, Western Carolines, where she arrived 26 November to resume her duty in the western Pacific.

For more than 8 months Kalk operated out of Ulithi on ASW patrols screening sea logistics forces during offensive operations from Luzon to Okinawa. From 16 to 23 December she patrolled northeast of Luzon during replenishment of the 3d Fleet. Sailing from Ulithi 29 December, she screened supply units which supported TF 38 during the erueial Lingayen Gulf operations on western Luzon. She continued this important duty until returning to Ulithi 27 January 1945.

As a unit of DesDiv 38, Kalk rendezvoused with TG 50.8 on 18 February for refueling and replenishment operations of TF 58 during the savage campaign on Iwo Jima. Returning to Ulithi 6 March, she sailed northward 13 March with TG 50.8 to screen logistic support for the 5th Flcet which was then clearing RyuRyu waters of enemy shipping and aircraft in preparation for the invasion of Okinawa 1 April. From then to the end of the war, Kalk operated with the 5th and 3d Fleets off the Ryukyus as escort, plane guard, and ASW screen. Concerned primarily with screening supply ships between Ulithi and Okinawa, she destroyed numberous Japanese mines during patrols. While steaming for Okinawa 5 June with logistic support group TG 30.8, she passed through a raging typhoon with destructive winds of more than 80 knots. Suffering only minor damage, Kalk continued serecning patrols. When the war ended 15 August, she was steaming from Okinawa to Ulithi.

Departing Ultithi 20 August, Kalk sailed via Saipan and Okinawa to Japan, arriving Tokyo Bay 1 September escorting Detroit (CI-8). Present at the formal Japanese surrender 2 September, she departed the 3d on an escort run to Entwetok. After returning to Tokyo Bay 16 September, she departed for the United States 12 October via the Philippines, Eniwetok, and Pearl Harbor. Reaching San Diego 17 November, she proceeded on the 17th for the East Coast, arriving Boston 11 December. After overhaul, she departed Boston 18 January 1946 and arrived Charleston, S.C., on the 20th. Kalk decommissioned at Charleston 3 May, entered the Atlantic Reserve Fleet and is currently berthed at Orange, Tex.

Kalk received eight battle stars for World War II service.

Benson-class destroyer

The Benson class was a class of 30 destroyers of the U.S. Navy built 1939.

It was named after William Shepherd Benson, a graduate of the Naval Academy in 1877. He commanded the USS Albany, USS Missouri, USS Utah, and the Philadelphia Navy Yard. Benson was appointed first Chief of Naval Operations in 1915 and then served as CNO until he retired 25 September 1919. He died in Washington, D.C., 20 May 1932. Α]

The Benson class was designed as an improved version of the Sims class with two stacks and a new machinery arrangement that featured alternating boiler and engine rooms designed to give the ships a better chance at surviving torpedo damage. Their scantlings, or framing dimensions, were increased to carry the weight of the new machinery. This increased the ship's displacement by about sixty tons. The Benson-class destroyer was the backbone of the pre-war Neutrality Patrols and brought the action to the enemy by participating in every major campaign of the war.

Like Constantine at the opening of the Council of Nicea, James delivered the opening address. He immediately set the tone and gave clear cues of what to expect. The doctrine and polity of the state church were not up for evaluation and reconsideration.

James immediately proceeded to hint that he found a great deal of security in the structure and hierarchy of the English church, in contrast to the Presbyterian model he witnessed in Scotland. He made no effort to hide his previous frustration in Scotland.

The Puritans were not allowed to attend the first day of the conference. On the second day, the four Puritans were allowed to join the meeting. John Reynolds took the lead on their behalf and raised the question of church government. However, any chance of his being heard was lost by one inopportune and, no doubt, unintended reference.

He asked if a more collegial approach to church administration might be in order. In other words, "Let's broaden the decision-making base." Reynolds posed his question this way: "Why shouldn't the bishops govern jointly with a presbytery of their brethren, the pastors, and ministers of the Church."

The word presbyterie was like waving a red flag before a bull. The king exploded in reply: "If you aim at a Scots Presbyterie, it agreeth as well with monarchy as God and the devil! Then Jack, and Tom, and Will, and Dick shall meet and censure me and my council." He then uttered what can be considered his defining motto and summary: "No bishop, no King!"

At this point, he warned Reynolds: "If this be all your party hath to say, I will make them conform themselves, or else I will harrie them out of the land, or else do worse!"

While Reynolds' unfortunate use of the term presbyterie damaged the Puritan case, he does get credit for proposing the most significant achievement of the conference. Reynolds "moved his majesty that there might be a new translation of the Bible because those which were allowed in the reign of King Henry VIII and King Edward VI were corrupt and not answerable to the truth of the original." James warmed to a new translation because he despised the then popular Geneva Bible. He was bothered more by its sometimes borderline revolutionary marginal notes than by the actual quality of the translation.

The occupational and recreational interests of the patient are also important in the evaluation of shoulder pain. A history of collision sports or weight lifting might make instability or acromioclavicular osteoarthritis more likely, whereas overhead sports or work activities might make rotator cuff pathology more likely.

The location of the pain can be helpful for diagnosis. Anterior-superior pain often can be localized to the acromioclavicular joint, whereas lateral deltoid pain is often correlated with rotator cuff pathology. Neck pain and radiating symptoms should be explored because cervical pathology can mimic shoulder pain. Typically, pain that radiates past the elbow to the hand is not related to shoulder pathology. However, it is not uncommon to have pain that radiates into the neck because the trapezius muscle often spasms in patients with underlying chronic shoulder pathology. The presence of both is more likely to be related to cervical pathology. Dull, achy night pain is often associated with rotator cuff tears or severe glenohumeral osteoarthritis.

Previous treatments and factors that aggravate or alleviate the pain can be important clues to the diagnosis. Night pain from sleeping on the affected shoulder, as well as a history of trauma, has been associated with rotator cuff tears.10 A painful arc, noted by pain with overhead activity, is associated with mild rotator cuff disease and tendinopathy as well as rotator cuff tears.10 , 15 A history of previous shoulder surgery is important because adhesive capsulitis and glenohumeral osteoarthritis can be early or late complications of surgery.

The patient's medical history, including joint problems, can help to narrow the differential diagnosis. Autoimmune diseases and inflammatory arthritis can affect the shoulder, resulting in erosions and wear in the glenohumeral joint, whereas diabetes and thyroid disorders can be associated with adhesive capsulitis.8 , 9

PHYSICAL EXAMINATION

Table 2 10 , 15 – 19 summarizes some of the shoulder maneuver tests and the associated conditions. The preferred order of the examination is: inspection, palpation, range of motion and strength tests, and provocative tests.

Inspection should involve the entire shoulder, with proper exposure of the anterior, lateral, and posterior shoulder. A scar can indicate previous surgery or trauma. The presence of deformity, particularly of the acromioclavicular joint, often indicates an old trauma. Atrophy of the supraspinatus, and less commonly the infraspinatus, may be present with a chronic rotator cuff tear.

Palpation can identify areas of pathology, especially with the acromioclavicular joint. Isolated tenderness that is localized to the acromioclavicular joint is often indicative of acromioclavicular osteoarthritis. Subacromial tenderness may suggest rotator cuff pathology. Multiple trigger points around the shoulder may indicate non-shoulder pathology such as fibromyalgia. It is important to palpate both shoulders because certain structures can be painful (e.g., coracoid process, long head of biceps tendon), even in a healthy shoulder. The presence of a disproportionate amount of discomfort is helpful for diagnosis.

Range of motion should be evaluated in flexion, abduction, internal rotation, and external rotation. If the patient has a full active range of motion, a passive range of motion need not be assessed. Loss of active and passive ranges of motion is the hallmark of adhesive capsulitis, but it also can be found with moderate to severe osteoarthritis of the glenohumeral joint. Loss of an active range of motion, with a relatively preserved passive range of motion, is often present in patients with rotator cuff pathology. Pain with an active range of motion between 60 and 100 degrees of abduction is known as the “painful arc” and is associated with rotator cuff disease.20

There are numerous provocative tests for the shoulder. Although knowledge of all the tests can be helpful to diagnose pathology, the primary care physician should be familiar with a standard set of tests that should be performed on every shoulder. The Hawkins' test is used to determine impingement ( Figures 1a and 1b ) . Tests for rotator cuff pathology are the drop-arm rotator cuff test ( Figures 2a and 2b ) the empty-can supraspinatus test ( Figure 3 ) the lift-off subscapularis test ( Figure 4 ) and the external rotation test ( Figure 5 ) . The cross-body adduction test ( Figure 6 ) is used to determine symptomatic acromioclavicular joint osteoarthritis, and the apprehension and relocation tests ( Figure 7 ) are used to determine shoulder instability.

Hawkins' Impingement Test. Forward flex the arm to 90 degrees with the elbow bent to 90 degrees. The arm is then internally rotated. A positive test, noted by pain on internal rotation, may signify subacromial impingement including rotator cuff tendinopathy or tear.

Drop-Arm Rotator Cuff Test. The arm is passively raised to 160 degrees. The patient is then asked to slowly lower the arm to the side. A positive test, noted by an inability to control the lowering phase and a dropping or giving way of the arm, may indicate a large rotator cuff tear.

Empty-Can Supraspinatus Test. The arms are abducted to 90 degrees and forward flexed 30 degrees. With the thumbs turned downward, the patient actively resists a downward force applied by the examiner. A positive test is indicated by weakness compared with the contralateral side and may indicate rotator cuff pathology, including supraspinatus tendinopathy or tear.

A positive test is indicated by weakness compared with the contralateral side and may indicate rotator cuff pathology, including supraspinatus tendinopathy or tear.

Lift-Off Subscapularis Test. With the arm internally rotated behind the patient's lower back, the patient internally rotates against the examiner's hand. A positive test is indicated by the inability to lift the hand off of the back and may indicate subscapularis tendinopathy or tear.

External Rotation/Infraspinatus Strength Test. The patient's arms are held at their sides with the elbows flexed to 90 degrees. The patient actively externally rotates against resistance. A positive test is indicated by weakness compared with the contralateral side and may be associated with infraspinatus or teres minor tendinopathy or tear.

A positive test is indicated by weakness compared with the contralateral side and may be associated with infraspinatus or teres minor tendinopathy or tear.

Cross-Body Adduction Test. The arm is passively adducted across the patient's body toward the contralateral shoulder. Pain may indicate acromioclavicular joint pathology, including chronic sprain or osteoarthritis.

Apprehension and Relocation Tests. With the patient supine, the patient's arm is abducted to 90 degrees and the elbow is flexed to 90 degrees. Pain and a sense of instability with further external rotation may indicate shoulder instability. Relief of these symptoms with a posteriorly directed force on the proximal humerus is a positive relocation test and further supports diagnosis of shoulder instability.

CLINICAL DECISION RULES

Clinical decision rules have been developed to determine if a patient has a rotator cuff tear.21 A prospective analysis of 400 patients found that the triad of weakness found with the empty-can supraspinatus and external rotation tests, along with a positive impingement test (e.g., Hawkins' impingement test), had a 98 percent probability of being a rotator cuff tear (partial or complete).5 Patients older than 60 years who had two out of three findings also had a 98 percent probability of a rotator cuff tear. A retrospective analysis of 191 persons found that the combination of being older than 65 years, having weakness on external rotation testing, and experiencing night pain resulted in a 91 percent probability of having a rotator cuff tear (partial or complete).10 However, 54 percent of asymptomatic persons older than 60 years have been shown to have a partial or full thickness rotator cuff tear by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).22

Chronometer Grade Movements

For a watch to earn the title of "chronometer", the movement has to pass a very strict battery of test under very strict control at the most renowned official testing organization, the C.O.S.C (Controle Officiel Suisse des Chronometres). The testing last for 15 consecutive days. For the first ten days, the movements are tested in five positions at 20 degrees Centigrade. Three of the positions are vertical: 3 o'clock left, 3 o'clock up, and 3 o'clock down. Two test are horizontal: dial up and dial down.

After that, the movement is left in the horizontal, dial up position, and the temperature is lowered to 4 degrees Celsius for one day. Then it is raised back to 20 degrees Celsius for one day. Then the temperature is increased to 36 degrees Celsius. For the last two days of the test, the movement is moved back to vertical 3 o'clock left position and the temperature is lowered back to 20 degrees Celsius.

The timekeeping of the movement is recorded daily, and at the end of the 15 day test, calculations are made in six different areas. The different areas are: 1. mean daily rate in the different positions. 2. mean variation. 3. maximum variation. 4. greatest difference between the mean daily rate and any individual rate. 5. variation of rate per 1 degree Celsius. 6. resumption of rate. The variances allowed are very small. The mean daily rate must be within -4 and +6 seconds per 24 hours. The only chronometer grade movements by Omega that I am aware of are: 28.10 RA, 331, 340, 354, 551, 560, 561, 562, 563, 564, 672, 682, 712, 864, 1001, 1011, 1021, 1041, f300Hz. How a Bumper Wind Movement Works

Bumper wind, a.k.a. hammer wind movements, are early automatics. In today's automatics, you have what is called a "full rotor" automatic. What this means, is that the rotor can go around the whole movement to wind the mainspring. But back in the early part of the 1900s, they didn't know how to make a full rotor automatic. The concept of the bumper wind came about in the 1920s by John Harwood. The rotor in a bumper wind swings around about 120-130 degrees. There were two draw backs to this movement, the first one is that it isn't the best system of winding. It takes a lot of wear to wind one completely. That's because the rotor, a.k.a. hammer mass, always wants to go in the direction of the mainspring. To compensate for this, watchmakers had to evenly place weights on the bottom part of the rotor. That way when the wearer moves their wrist, the rotor will be pulled away from the barrel bridge so that the watch could wind. The second is that the constant slamming of the rotor on to the winding bridge causes wear on the parts. The term "bumper wind" comes from the bump you feel when the rotor returns to the winding bridge.

Here is a picture of the movement in my Omega bumper wind:

Differences between the 28.10 RA PC and 28.10 RA SC PC was the center seconds of the 28.10RA SC PC.

The 342 was in the first Seamaster. The 342 is identical to the 28.10 RA PC, but used concealed buffer springs. The 354 was identical to the 342, but used a swan neck regulator. 355 was the 354 with a date feature.

The 28.10 was a unidirectional wind.

The 501 is identical to the 471, but with swan neck regulator.

The 750 is a modified 550.

The 470 and 490 were the first Omega with rotor wind (360 degrees) winding bi-directionally.

471 was Omega's first full rotor automatic.

The first Constellation was introduced in 1952 with a Pie Pan dial, and 28.10 RA movement.

The base caliber in the Dynamic Chronograph is the ETA 2890-A2, and the chronograph movement is Dubois-Depraz 2030.

Besides adding a Geneve wave decor to the 1120 movement, and polishing the parts, Omega also adds their own winding rotor to the movement.
