1975: Chinese archaeologists announce the discovery of the gigantic tomb of the first emperor of Qin Shihuangdi country near Xian. It contains the statues of over 6,000 life-size terracotta soldiers and horses.

1916: General von Falkenhayn launches a final offensive to seize Verdun.

1789 : Necker, director general of finance, was sacked by Louis XVI, who considered him too liberal.

1302: The militias of the Flemish municipalities in revolt against France which has occupied the region since 1297, defeat the French army of Philippe le Bel in Kortrijk during the Battle of the Golden Spurs.
