1919: The treaty ending the First World War is signed in the Hall of Mirrors of the Palace of Versailles, between Germany and the Allies.

1914: Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, and his wife, Sophie de Hoenberg, visiting Sarajevo, are assassinated by a 19-year-old Serbian nationalist, Gavrilo Princip.

1519: Charles I of Spain, 19, is proclaimed Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, under the name of Charles V or Charles Quint.

1389: The Serbs are defeated by the Ottomans at the battle of Kosovo Polié.
