1873: The National Assembly compels the president Adolphe Thiers, too republican for his taste, to resign and replaces him with Marshal de Mac Mahon.

1844: The first telegraph line is inaugurated between Washington and Baltimore. The electric telegraph was developed seven earlier by the American physicist Samuel Morse.

1543: Death of Nicolas copernicus, who had discovered that it is the Sun, and not the Earth, which is at the center of the system, in opposition to the doctrine of the Church which places the Earth at the center of the Universe.
