1791: Theconstituent Assembly pass a law which grants a right of property to inventors and allows them to obtain a patent guaranteeing them the monopoly of manufacturing their invention for fifteen years.

1785: The Frenchman Jean-Pierre Blanchard and the American physicist John Jeffries for the first time cross the Channel in a inflated balloon to hydrogen.

1598: Regent Boris Fiodorovich Godunov, brother-in-law of Tsar Fedor I, seized power after the latter's death.
