As part of the Wednesdays of History, Arte is rebroadcasting a documentary this evening devoted to suicide bombers, those young fanatic Japanese pilots that a beleaguered country sent to their death against American warships. 4000 of them perished during the year 1945. An American director of Japanese origin went to meet surviving pilots, prepared to become suicide bombers, and who waited for a suicide mission order which never arrived. . Beyond the prejudices and the morbid fascination that they can inspire, these accounts clearly pose the question of the responsibility of a state at war towards its soldiers and its people. The testimony of American veterans presents a sensitive counterpoint to the accounts of these suicide attacks ...Finally, four historians (three Japanese and one American) recall the context in which - the militarized Japan of the 1930s and 1940s - this whole generation grew up.
