The Ministry of Culture announced yesterday a draft composition for the scientific steering committee of the future House of the History of France, which could be chaired by Jean-Pierre Rioux, Honorary Inspector General of National Education. Among the names put forward to participate in this committee, historians Jean Favier, Benjamin Stora and Jean-Claude Petitfils have given their consent to sit on it.
Since the announcement in September by Nicolas Sarkozy that the House of French History would be created on the Parisian site of the National Archives, several renowned historians (Pierre Nora, Jacques Le Goff, etc.) have taken a stand against this project. They fear to see the House of the History of France instrumentalised by the political power, in particular around the theme of "national identity".
